We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the new fibre optic cable installation linking the UK and Belgium. The project strengthens cross-channel connectivity and delivers the infrastructure needed to support future data demand between the two countries.
UK Shore End – Direct Installation
On the UK side, a 2.4 km direct shore end installation was completed, including:
Landfall works at the beach landing point
Diving support operations
Cable pull-in support
Installation of articulated pipe (AP) for cable protection
These works ensured the safe and secure transition of the cable from offshore to onshore infrastructure.
Belgium Shore End – Pre-Lay Installation
On the Belgian side, a 16.2 km pre-laid shore end was successfully installed. This phase involved:
Pre-lay grapnel run to clear the seabed of debris
Recovery and removal of several out-of-service cables
Cable load-out and collection
Installation of the new fibre optic cable
Burial to 2m depth for long-term stability and protection
The pre-lay methodology enabled efficient execution and minimised disruption to the local seabed environment.
Strengthening Digital Links
This bi-national project represents an important milestone in advancing subsea connectivity between the UK and mainland Europe.
By delivering a robust and well-protected fibre optic link, it supports both current and future growth in digital services, ensuring resilient data transfer across the Channel.
